Nosy Be, the island I rediscover through its scents

Nosy Be, my island of scents

I am Brenda. I have always lived in Nosy Be, northwest of Madagascar. On my island of scents, the sea, light and scents set the rhythm of the days.

Finding Nosy Be, off Madagascar

The sky, the wind, the time for a swim: I love these markers and this closeness to nature.

Swimming and observing from a distance

I swim among silver, blue or yellow fish; sometimes I meet a ray. In season, you can see whales offshore. Above all, I remember the whale shark, immense and calm. We keep our distance.

The light changes until evening

The pale morning light becomes bright at noon. Evening brings back the pirogues and the sunsets, orange, red or purple. I always stop to watch.

Smelling the island at Hell-Ville market

At the market in Hell-Ville, I continue to learn the island through its scents.
- Bourbon vanilla : warmth and wood.
- Ylang-ylang : a bright, distinct floral note.
- Clove : a hint of spice, a subtle depth.
- Coconut : softness, roundness, a familiar scent.

These scents have accompanied me since childhood. I wanted to share them while staying true to them.
