The coconut oil I prepare for my candles
By Brenda · Nosy Be · Published on · Updated on
Choosing to make it by hand
- Control of the raw material: fresh coconuts at the right maturity.
- Tracking the process: I record what I add at each stage.
- A consistent texture: one of the cues I check before my candle trials.
From coconut to oil, my process
Using a wooden tool called an “ambozy”, I scrape the flesh by hand until finely and evenly grated. The work is physical and tiring, the first step in making my oil.
- Grate the fresh coconut flesh.
- Press with filtered lukewarm water to obtain thick milk.
- Let it settle, then collect the cream.
- Cook very gently until oil and fibre separate.
- Strain finely and leave to rest for 24 h.
- Store tightly closed, away from light.
What I observe in the resulting oil
- A clean smell, without rancid or smoky notes.
- A light, even colour, with no suspended particles.
- An even appearance at rest and after melting again, depending on room temperature.
Finding this work in my creations
- Candles: in my trials, the combination of beeswax and homemade coconut oil helps me seek a steady flame and keep the vanilla noticeable.
